ROMONTANA was founded as a Romanian national NGO in 2000 with the main purpose of supporting the overall development of the Romanian mountain rural areas.

The main fields of activity are: Rural development in the mountain areas (e.g. mountain agriculture and economic activites), Sustainable development of the mountain areas, Agri-tourism and mountain rural tourism, Community development, Sustainable development of forests, Environment protection, Mountain quality products, Small farms development, Culture and traditions in the mountain areas.

Between 2001 and 2006 "ROMONTANA" has implemented several small scale projects in cooper-ation with Euromontana (European Association of Mountain Regions) and SAB (Swiss Association of Mountain Regions) financed trough SDC (Swiss Development and Cooperation Agency) as well as numerous local development projects in the areas covered by the association.

Between 2006 - 2010 "Romontana" has implemented as beneficiary and in partnership several cross-border cooperation projects between Romania, Ukraine and Republic of Moldova financed trough the Neighborhood Program PHARE Cross-Border Cooperation Romania-Ukraine and TACIS.

From December 2012 Romontana is implementing two more projects, one financed by the European Commission torugh « Lifelong learning programme » and the sedond one financed by Joint Operational Programme Romania – Ukraine - Republic of Moldova 2007 – 2013.

Within this project Romontana receives the smallest part of the budget and fewer activities to develop compared to the other partners. For an organization made up of young people this is a capacity building process and an opportunity to develop competence and expertise along with international and national stronger partners. Romontana representatives had a promissing and diligent contribution during the application stage.
